Harsh Winter at Home? Keep an Eye Out for These Pests

If you live somewhere with harsh winters, then you know all too well how quickly the temperatures can drop and the snow can pile up. But while you’re busy stocking up on winter clothes and shovels, don’t forget to prepare for some of the pests that are common during this time of year, as well. Below is a list of winter pests to look out for and how to prevent them from making their way into your home.

Rodents
With temperatures dropping below freezing and food sources becoming scarce, mice and rats will be looking for warm shelters like your home or shed. To keep these critters away, inspect any potential entry points around your property (such as cracks in walls or gaps around windows) and seal them off with caulk or steel wool. You can also place traps near likely hiding spots such as storage boxes or behind appliances. A rodent infestation may be difficult to get rid of, so hire pest control services if your problem gets out of control. We recommend Mug-A-Bug in Colorado Springs, (719) 591-0337.

Insects
When it comes to insects, you’ll want to focus on prevention since they tend to find their way into homes through small openings around windows or doors. You can do this by sealing any cracks around window frames with weather stripping, applying caulking around doors and window sills, and fixing any broken screens in your home. Additionally, be sure to remove any standing water near your home which can serve as breeding grounds for these pesky bugs.

Birds
With food sources dwindling during the winter months, birds may choose to settle in attics or other sheltered areas of the house for warmth. To keep them away, try hanging CDs with reflective surfaces around your property—birds tend not to like shiny objects. Additionally, make sure all holes leading inside are securely sealed off so they won’t have a way in.

All in all, when it comes to preparing for winter pests it’s important to be proactive about preventing them from entering your home in the first place by sealing off potential entry points with caulk or steel wool. Additionally, removing standing water near your property will help deter insects from settling down nearby. And finally, hang CDs with reflective surfaces outdoors—birds don’t like shiny objects. Following these simple steps will help ensure that you stay pest-free all winter long!
